The Glens Falls Symphony 2024 Children’s Concerts present: Peter and the Wolf

The Glens Falls Symphony will present our 2024 Children’s Concerts with Peter and the Wolf performances by Sergei Prokofiev this November. Under the baton of Charles Peltz, music director, two performances will take place, with the first on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at 9:30 am at the Joyce Irwin Auditorium at Hudson Falls High School, in Hudson Falls, NY. The second will be on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 9:45 am at the Ticonderoga High School Auditorium, in Ticonderoga, NY. Each performance will be 45 minutes in length.

"Peter and the Wolf" was written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936 and was meant for a children's theater in Moscow. The story and the music were written by Prokofiev; he used instruments from four instrument families, strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion to tell the story. In the story, each character is represented by a particular musical instrument. This piece serves as a great introduction to music and the instruments of the orchestra.

Students from Hudson Falls, The Kings School, Ticonderoga, Minerva, Keene Valley, Crown Point, North Warren Central Schools, Schroon Lake and more, will be attending this two-day concert event.

The symphony is thrilled to welcome special guests’ narrators, NewsChannel 13 Saratoga-North Country news chief Mark Mulholland and Composer, and We Are Instrumental Founder Evan Mack.

The Glens Falls Symphony takes great pride in the tradition of the children’s concert which shares music made on instruments with hundreds of years of history. Glens Falls is the smallest city in America to support a fully professional symphony, making this opportunity both unique, and important for the rural school districts it will be serving. “With an array of electronic devices and access to the internet, kids have so much at their fingertips" said retired Senator Betty Little. "However, there is nothing like the sound of a live symphony.  The Glens Falls Symphony is phenomenal.  These students are in for a very special and memorable treat."

Symphony Executive Director Jennifer Brink says “Sharing the tremendous range of the orchestra sounds with young people who may never have heard these instruments before is a wondrous thing. We are delighted that after several years of planning, the children in our region can hear the talented musicians of the Glens Falls Symphony in a concert designed just for them. We hope to continue this program with new concerts each year so that the Glens Falls Symphony forms a critical piece of every local child’s cultural education. We feel we have a duty to share this great art with children, and to contribute to building the arts audiences of tomorrow.”

"Tale as old as time" a certain teapot sings in a favorite Disney movie.   Our teapot could be singing about another tale - “Peter and the Wolf”, that fantastical story of an adventurous boy and his animal friends. Your GFS will breathe new life into "Peter" as we present it to enthralled children at Hudson Falls, and Ticonderoga, High School Auditoriums this fall. The orchestra musicians will truly become a cat and bird; a duck and a wolf; a boy and his grandfather.  We on stage love playing this piece not only as a musical mini-masterpiece, but to see its magical effect on young hearts.” – Music Director Charles Peltz

The Glens Falls Symphony 2024 Children’s Concerts are sponsored by The Charles R. Wood Foundation, The Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation, The Cloudsplitter Foundation and Stewart’s Shops. About Glens Falls Symphony

The Glens Falls Symphony, begun as a community amateur orchestra in 1977, and now moves into its fifth decade of music-making as a professional orchestra. Since Maestro Charles Peltz’ arrival in 2000, the fully professional Glens Falls Symphony has performed a dynamic repertoire, regularly including musical premieres and world-renowned guest artists.

The orchestra continues to expand its musical and educational offerings to include Children’s Concerts for up to 3,000 students in the 7-county region in Warren and Washington counties, plus in the southeastern Adirondacks. The orchestra served over 12,000 people in 2023, and the 40th anniversary season welcomed its third largest concert audiences in its history. The musicians offer master classes, as well as family concerts, summer pops programs and more. Cited as “one of the great orchestras of our country” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Joseph Schwantner, the orchestra comprises professional musicians who come from all over the Northeast, and beyond, to perform.
