2019-2020 Concert Season

The Symphony Dances!

Experience lively rhythms and the power of movement and dance from around the world,
featuring special dance performances of flamenco, ballet, Irish step dancing & more!

Concert One: Flamenco! September 29, 2019, 4pm   Glens Falls High School Auditorium
The 2019-20 Season opens with the rhythmic stamp of dancers’ feet and high-energy flourish in a celebration of Flamenco and the music of Spain. Castanets and staccato trumpets will pepper the air in Chabrier’s España , Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, and De Falla’s masterpiece, El amor brujo. Featured performances by flamenco dancers Kati Garcia-Renart and Nicole Bernhardt with Mezzo soprano Tascha Anderson.


Opening Night Party September 29, 2019, 6 p.m.  Come celebrate the Opening of Glens Falls Symphony’s 2019-20 Concert Season! Party at The Queensbury Hotel in downtown Glens Falls directly following the performance of our opening concert, “Flamenco.” Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and beverages in the company of fellow music lovers. $25 ticket includes hors d’oeuvres and wine/beer. Cash bar also available.


Concert Two: Ballet Grace  November 3, 2019, 4pm   Glens Falls High School Auditorium
The Symphony’s celebration of dance brings the unmatched beauty of Tchaikovsky’s ballet music to the stage. The “Waltz” from Sleeping Beauty, the opening scene from Swan Lake, the “Cossack Dance” from Mazzepa and other works will join Aaron Copland’s Rodeo Suite. Plus: a special performance of Gordon Jacob’s Trombone Concerto by GFS Principal Trombonist Christopher Moore.


Concert Three: Yuletide Around the World  December 15, 2019, 4pm   Glens Falls High School Auditorium
Come help us celebrate with holiday music from Ireland, Russia, England, Germany, France and Mexico. Joining the orchestra are Irish Step dancers from the National Museum of Dance Academy, who will share this vibrant and rhythmic Gaelic art. Plus: Boy Soprano Drake Belrose (the soloist for 2019’s performance of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms) will sing with the orchestra.


Concert Four: Dance! Beats!   March 8, 2020, 4pm Zankel Music Center, Skidmore College
The Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust Colloquium Concerts continue at Skidmore with the beloved music of Argentinian tango composer Astor Piazzolla in Libertango, Coral and other short dances; Rounds for Orchestra by David Diamond; and Bela Bartok’s vibrant Rumanian Dances, with a special dance performance. Plus: Greenwich Village Portraits by David Amram (composer of the Beat generation) performed by saxophonist Ken Radnofsky with the composer in residence to read selected Beat poetry. Presentation of historic photography of the Village Vanguard, folk singer Odetta, and other legendary figures and places of the Beat generation.


Concert Five: Dance Through Time Season Finale May 3, 2020, 4pm   Glens Falls High School Auditorium
The Season Finale, sponsored by the Touba Family Foundation, takes you on a journey through three eras of dance: music of the Renaissance in Suite No. 3 of Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances, the 20th Century in John Adams’ portrait of Chairman Mao and Madame Mao dancing a foxtrot in The Chairman Dances, and the luscious harmonies of the Romantic era bring the season to a rhythmically vibrant finale in Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances.
